Daffodils
When the daffodils popped up this year, it really struck me what a welcome pop of colour they were after a dark grey winter. That inspired me to make a quilt (or two in fact, but lets focus on the first one for now). I wanted the background to be like paint strokes. With a quick and simple daffodil design that would work for a cushion.
I started making the background. I kept it to a simple repeat pattern, so that it could be pieced together quickly. It made using three different fabrics to make a finished square of 16.5" (to make a 16 inch cushion once sewn up).
There are 8 rows each two inch wide once combined, with the first , fourth and seventh sewn as one block and cut into strips afterwards. I did the same combining the second, fifth and eight rows and sewing as one. And also for the third and ninth rows.
Block A:
Fabric 1 - 6.5" x 7.5"
Fabric 2 - 6.5" x 7.5"
Fabric 3 - 4.5" x 7.5"
Sew together along the 7.5" edge to form a strip 16.5" by 6.5". Cut into 3 strips 2.5" wide.
Block B:
Fabric 1 - 2.5" x 7.5"
Fabric 3 - 6.5" x 7.5"
Fabric 1 - 6.5" x 7.5"
Fabric 2 - 2.5" x 7.5"
Combine as in block A.
Block C:
Fabric 1 - 4.5" x 5"
Fabric 2 - 6.5" x 5"
Fabric 3 - 5.5" x 5"
Sew together along the 5" edge and cut into 2 strips.
You should now have 8 strip, which need to be sewn together to make the square background:

The daffodils were pieced using 4 different fabrics and green for the stem. Outlines for each were traced on to Heat n bond, and ironed on to the fabric. They were carefully cut out with a little bit extra included where pieces were going overlap to prevent gaps.
Before I started ironing to attach to the background I checked they fit together correctly with a tracing of the image to check I was lining everything up correctly.
I sewed around the flowers with a satin stitch, made my quilt sandwich and quilted.
